PRESS RELEASE

Comrade Nosipho Ntwanambi, who passed on last night following prolonged illness, was a crusader for women’s rights and an all round activist who placed her life and energies at the service of our revolutionary movement and the people of South Africa. Having joined the ranks of the African National Congress following the June 16 1976 uprisings, a definitive moment in the struggle for our liberation, she rose through the ranks of the organisation through sheer tenacity, hard work and genuine selfless commitment to the just cause of the liberation of our people. At the time of her passing she was a member of the National Executive Committee of the ANC and the Deputy President of the ANC Women’s League. The African National Congress is deeply saddened by her passing as she leaves a deep void in the ongoing struggle for total emancipation of our people and the fight for a just and equitable society where all its citizens enjoy equal freedoms, rights and opportunities.

The African National Congress sends its condolences to the Ntwanambi family, the African National Congress Women’s League and the progressive women’s movement in its entirety. As a movement we are that much poorer for the loss of a revolutionary who was passionate about community work, education and the ongoing development. In the Western Cape, Comrade Ntwanambi leaves an indelible mark for her work as a servant of the people. As we mourn her passing, we are heartened by the immense contribution she made in developing and nurturing many young people in the African National Congress and would thus call upon young people and young women in particular to learn lessons from her displayed dedication to her people, emulate her example and continue the fight to build a truly non-racial, non-sexist society.
